You can write a song without thinking about a tune or melody line just by using the Circle of
Fifths as our guide to chord progressions.
Let's begin by playing the cadence known as I-vi-IV-V7 twice, then repeat it. This sets
the statement and response called Part A of our "song". Notice how 2nd time through we
make a slight change in the final barre to finish on the stable major chord of C.
The Cmaj finish ushers us into Part B of our "song" thus:
The double bar lines at end of line 2 and at start of line 3 tell us we are changing the
playing in some way - it could be a change of rhythm or of the style of the song. In our
song we are changing to Part B of the song.
So here is a simpe plan to lay out a set of lines which will effectively be a song. The point
I want to make is that it is all based on chord changes within the Circle of Fifths.
Moreover, we can modify many or all of the chords I have put down to make this song more
intersting to the ear and maintain the integrity of the overall plan as put down here.
