The Londonderry Air has its origins shrouded in the mists of time. Perhaps its origins were in the early 1790's but no one is certain about this. A similar if not exact air was transcribed by Edward Bunting in 1792 but it was not until 1913 that an English Lawyer set the air to the words we now know as "Danny Boy". Wickipedia reveals many settings of this celtic folk song by poets, as church hymns and as funeral dirges. Most recently it was set to a poem during the procession of Princess Diana's body through the streets of London.
My arrangement is set to the song Danny Boy and I find it difficult to play on the ukuele because of the need for long sustained siingle strums. My Ukulele cannot do it and I am looking for one which can. Meantime it is an exercise in using the Kimo Hussey strumming style since many "chords" only use two or three strings and the melody note is on the E or C string which has to become the highest sound in the chord. This then demands an upwards strum of 2 or 3 strings only....I have indiocated where I use these up-strrums.
