This album was the second released by the Carpenters in 1970. In 2003 it was ranked 175 on the Rolling Stones list of the top 500 albums of all time! It was the Carpenters first Gold Record. It gained them their world wide reputation. It ranked No 2 on the USA's 'Billboard' in 1972 and spent 76 weeks in the top 50's in the early 70's in the UK.
The 1970's was a period of hard driving rock rhythms and loud guitars - but the siblings Richard and Karen Carpenter produced a soft melodic easy listening sound which lead them to three no 1 hits and five no 2 hits on American 'Billboard'. In addition they had twelve top ten singles and sold 100 million copies in their 14 year singing and performing history. Their reign came to an end by the untimely death of Karen who suffered a cardiac arrest as a complication of Anorexia Nervosa, an eating disorder.
The publicity surrounding her demise led to the world-wide dissemination of information about the dangers of eating disorders.
Bacharch and David
Burt Bacharach was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1928 and schooled at Forest Hills High in New York City. He studied music at McGill University, the Mannes School of Music and finally at the music Academy of the West in Montecito, California. Following army service he worked as accompanying pianist for Vic Damone, The Ames Brothers, Steve Lawrence and Paula Stewart, who became the first of his four wives. He also toured with Marlene Deitrich for some years as her music arranger and accompanist.
In 1957 he met Hal David and they began a partnership which produced some of the most memorable songs during the next 4 decades. They formed a partnership with Dionne Warwick during the 60's and 70's producing 38 singles for her including 22 top 40; 12 top 20 & 9 top 10 hits on "American Billboard Hot 100 Charts"!
Bacharach's music is characterised by unusual chord progressions, syncopated rhythms, irregular phrasing, frequent modulation and odd changing meters.
This Arrangement.
The introduction I have written to this song is a vamp which is suitable for any song in any key. This means, you find the appropriate position of the frets you intend using and go for it!
