Composed by Vernon Duke and E.Y. Harburg in 1932 for the Broadway Musical, "Walk a Little Faster" it was an original hit for the Orcestra of Freddie Martin in 1933. But it made the Cashbox Top 50 in a remake by the Sauter-Finnegan Band in 1952 following the release of a film inspired by the song itself. Composer Alec Wilder stated "Thre are no two ways about it - this is the perfect theatre song".
Basie's 1955 recording is the best known remake. In it Thad Wilder plays his famous "Pop Goes the Weasel" solo while the band members play and shout "one more time" and "one more once" to the solo artist........This recording was inducted into the "Grammy Hall of Fame".
Other famous recordings were put down by Ella Fitzgerald and Shirley Bassey.
Vernon Duke (Vladimir Alexandrovich Dukelsy) 1903-1969 was a native of Belarus in the Russian Empire. He was of noble birth with mixed blood of Georgian-Austrian-Spanish and Russian descent. He wrote some of the most melodic popular songs of our times including: Taking a Chance on Love; I Can't Get Started; What is there to Say?" Autumn in New York and this one, April in Paris.
He was something of a prodigy. At 11 he was admitted to the prestigious Conservatory of Kiev where he studied composition with Rheinhold Gliere and musical theory with Boroslav Yavorsky.
In 1921 with his family, he escaped the Russian Bolshevics by travelling steerage class to the US. In 1922 he was befriended by the young Jewish immigrant Jacob Gershowitz (aka George Gershwin) who encouraged him to shorten and anglesise his name to "Vernon Duke". But he continued writing classical music and poetry in his Russian name until 1955.
In 1924 he was commissioned by Serge Diaghalev to write a ballet. This was premiered by the Ballet Russe the next year.
