Melvin Howard Torme (1925 - 1999) wrote this song in 1946. Mel was one of the great Jazz song-writer singers of the last century. He was born in Chicago of Russiian/Jewish parents. At 4 yrs he was called a child prodigy, singing professionally the 1930's song 'You're Driving me Crazy'. But he became an expert pianist, drummer and wait for it...Ukulele player ! He was also the peerless Jazz "scat" singer of his time. He coached other Jazz 'scat' singers like Ella Fitzgerald & Michael Buble.
It was said of his voice - "Torme works with the most beautiful voice a man is allowed to have and he combines it with a flawless sense of pitch!"
His lyricist of the many hit songs he wrote was Robert (Bob) Wells, another prolific artistic contributor to modern American Theatre and Films.
This song was originally written in the heat of a Southern Californian summer. Torme was visiting Wells. He saw the first 4 lines of the song on a notepad. They thought it would be fun to write a Christmas Song in mid-summer. The song was completed in 40 minutes! They named it 'The Christmas Song'. It is the second most performed of all US Christmas tunes only bettered by Crosby's White Christmas. Torme and Wells were jointly awarded the 1998 'Towering Song' Award by the American Songwriters Association just before Wells died aged 76yrs. Glen Rose has voiced it as the Jazz song it was intended to be. He has changed its key from Eb to D because key 'D' better suits our little guitar's range.
A MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.
